About Us

Welcome to PFSA

PFSA offers financial services to protect members and their families and provides cultural, social, educational and charitable activities.

History of the PFSA

Chartered on August 1, 1880, the Portuguese Society of America (PFSA) is the result of the Merger of four great societies as of January 1, 2010:

  • Portuguese Benevolent Society of California (founded in 1880)
  • Portuguese Fraternal Society of Rhode Island (founded in 1906)
  • Portuguese Mutual Benefit Society of Massachusetts (founded in 1911)
  • Portuguese American Fraternal Society of New Jersey (founded in 1920)

The merger resulted in the PFSA now having the largest membership and the financially strongest Portuguese Fraternal Benefit Society in the Nation. The PFSA Home Office is located in Modesto, CA and the Society is licensed to transact business in California, Nevada and Rhode Island and has 67 fraternal councils (local subordinate chapters). We are proud of the dreams and vision of our forefathers and continue to honor their vision by succeeding and meeting the challenges of the XXI century with dignity and pride.

Our Cultural Center

J.A. Freitas Library

Preserving Portuguese History and Heritage

Founded in 1964, the J.A. Freitas Library is a Special Collections Library dedicated to preserving and celebrating the Portuguese experience throughout the world. Privately owned and operated by the Supreme Council of PFSA with support from the Louise Freitas Estate, the library serves as a vital cultural and historical resource for researchers, students, and the Portuguese-American community.

The library houses more than 12,000 works focused on Portuguese history, culture, and immigration, with particular strength in materials from the Azores and Portuguese communities in California. Its collection includes rare books, historic periodicals dating back to the late 1800s, magazines, albums, videos, and microfilm—many of which are available for circulation or through California’s inter-library loan network.

Located in Modesto, California, the J.A. Freitas Library welcomes visitors to explore a rich archive of Portuguese heritage. The library is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and with a valid California ID, visitors may check out up to four books for a two-week period.

The PFSA Museum

A living exhibit of Portuguese heritage

The PFSA Museum highlights the history, traditions, and accomplishments of Portuguese immigrants and their families. Through photographs, documents, and artifacts, the museum captures the dedication, faith, and community spirit that helped shape Portuguese life in California and beyond.

Exhibits include Holy Ghost celebration artifacts, traditional Portuguese costumes, fraternal organization memorabilia, large historic photographs, and miniature whaling instruments. Whaling was a key driver of Azorean immigration to California, followed later by new opportunities created during the Gold Rush era.
